How to have a wonderful week

Don’t face another Monday morning death march to the office.

Perk up and get pumped because you’re going to have a wonderful week.

But how, you ask? Challenge yourself to snap out of zombie-mode and shake things up a bit – monotony and boredom play a big role in workplace doldrums. Plus, when you’re stuck in a rut it’s much harder to turn off autopilot and really engage in what you’re doing each day. So WAKE UP, pour some enthusiasm into your coffee mug this week, and take this WonderWeek Challenge!

Follow the challenge each day this week and you’ll see how it feels when work works for you.

MONDAY | play dress up

You may have gotten a little too comfortable over the years and let your style slouch. When you look like crap, you feel like crap and people don’t take you as seriously. So, guys, shine your shoes and put on that designer suit that’s been hanging out in the back of your closet. Ladies, slip on that amazing dress you always get compliments on and top it off with a bold necklace, lipstick, and a sassy attitude as you stride into the office. Note how looking like a million bucks today makes people recognize your value a little more than on any other ordinary Monday.

TUESDAY | spruce up your office

Does your office or cubicle look like a jail cell? Bare walls, florescent lighting, void of any personal touch? No wonder you feel like you’re working off a prison sentence. You’ve got to add some flair to your space! After all, you do spend quite a bit of time there. Collect some things around the house or go shopping for office décor that will help make your workspace a pleasant place to be. Hang some art on the walls (you can never go wrong with framed drawings from your kids). Breathe some life into the room with plants (peace lilies, succulents, air plants, philodendrons, and spider plants don’t need a lot of light or water and are basically unkillable). Add some fun and functional finishing touches like pen holders, a business card desk display, wall hooks or bookshelves filled with things that make you smile (the funkier they are the better the conversation starter). Turning your office into a space you can call your own makes you to feel more comfortable and helps you deal with a stressful workday like a pro.

WEDNESDAY | make a healthy lunch

Grabbing a burrito or burger at the fast food joint around the corner may feel like the quick, satisfying solution to your midday hunger pangs but you’re paying for it in the long run. Literally. Eating out every day burns a hole in your wallet and significantly adds to the extra calories you’ll need to burn later that day at the gym. Packing your own lunch not only saves you well over $1,000 a year, but it also lets you control what you’re eating. The healthier you eat the better you feel, the more energy you have, and the better your brain works aka work won’t take as much work.

I know what you’re thinking – you don’t have time to prepare a healthy lunch. Make time – you don’t need a lot of it. I make my lunch the night before in seven minutes flat. It’s fresh, portable, and super healthy. How do I perform this miracle, you ask? Well let me introduce you to my good friend, salad-in-a-jar. By the way, you can jam anything in a jar and it turns out awesome, not just salad. Soups, leftovers, oatmeal, you name it.

THURSDAY | stand up to stress

Stressed out? Me too. Let’s kick its ass today. Our weapons of choice: meditation, exercise, and gratitude. Meditation is supposed to be crazy amazing for your health and sanity but I find it really hard to do (read: boring) but, as the old saying goes, you can do five minutes of anything. This morning, let’s go from zzz’s to zen by doing a five minute meditation right upon waking.

It’s midday and work’s going well then something blows up, as it always does. Don’t freak out. Go blow off some steam at the gym during lunch or take a 20-minute walk outside.

We made it through the day, hooray! Let’s be productive on the commute home. Instead of mumbling obscenities into the rush hour abyss, do a gratitude exercise. State three things you were grateful for today. Then state three things you’re excited for tomorrow. See how good that feels? The traffic has parted and you will greet your loved ones at home with a refreshingly breezy attitude and chipper disposition. Take that, stress!

FRIDAY | turn your coworkers into friends

You’ll hear it time and time again – it’s the people that make or break a job. Sure, your job could be utter hell and your coworkers angels, so bridging that gap may be a little trickier but if your job is just run-of-the-mill crappy, friends at the office make a big difference. An office buddy supports you during stressful times, has your back when you dealing with a difficult client, and celebrates with you when you finish a big project. Turn your coworkers into friends by moving past the elevator small talk and really taking the time to get to know them on a personal level. Ask questions, share things about yourself, and, for goodness sake, get out of the office. It’s much easier to bond with coworkers outside of the work environment so grab your team or a handful of people you work closely with and plan an after-work outing for next Friday. If it’s hard to plan around everyone’s schedules, set a lunch date instead. And if you’re getting a case of the “shys” right now, start small, and ask a coworker to take a walk around the block with you – sunshine and fresh air are hard to turn down.
